Type Structures

Typography/Editorial/Cover Design
Typography is just a jar full of ingredients for a recipe.

Treat type like food, bring all the ingredients together to cook a delicious cuisine of texture and flavours. Creating a book from learning typography is fun and practical. Basically, writing it all down and applying what I’ve learned so far. In this design challenge, I created a book that expresses the fun use of type, its history, theory, and technical use. Importantly, the whole book is a reflection of one’s understanding of its purpose. It details that type can be used chaotically, firmly, traditionally, and expressively like cooking. Adding spices and experimenting can either improve the recipe or elevate it to a new one.

Expressive take reflecting current inspirations.

The book’s creation was done while I was studying type. Conceptualizing it while confirming the facts was done simultaneously with the help of good instructions. I was inspired by Memphis design language and thought it was an appropriate dish pan to cook the entire recipe. The moodboard was all about its abstracted use and placing of geometrical shapes. Just like type, they can go together or separated to use us design motifs. The substrate is there as a playground waiting for these elements to play along.

Type is fun.

The design of the book is purely personal, inventive, and a learning experience. I used colours that is easy put like a sauce. When dealing with typography, I like to think of it as the same way as cooking a delicious cuisine. With my design decisions, this project helped communicate my learning of typography for the very first time, with a fun and vibrant approach.
